Execution Blocked in Tyler Murder Case

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has blocked tomorrow's scheduled execution of death row inmate Allen Bridgers. The case has been returned to a judge in Tyler to review the inmate's claim that he's mentally retarded. Bridgers was convicted of killing Mary Amie at her home in Tyler during a 1997 cocaine-induced rage.

Investigators say Bridgers had been living with Amie at her trailer home for several weeks after being introduced by her trucker nephew. The appeals court in Austin on Friday ordered his case back to Smith County for the trial court to consider whether Bridgers is retarded and ineligible to be executed.

The matter goes before State District Judge Cynthia Kent, who presided at the first trial. Bridgers would have been the 17th condemned prisoner to receive lethal injection this year in Texas.
