Longview Teen Motocross Racer Among Naton's Elite

Sometimes you can find your passion when you least expect it. That was just the case with John Cal Baker of Longview.

At age of 12, he had never seen a motocross race track, let alone a race. One day after his first visit to a track  he would begin his training and has now become one of the best amateurs in the nation.

"It's tough," John Cal said of motocross.  "It's not that hard once you get used to it though, but at first it's tough."

When he speaks, John Cal seems a little shy.  But as soon as he hits the kick start, that shyness flys away as fast as he goes by.

For four years, John Cal has shown no fear on the track, zooming straight ahead and becoming one of the best US amateurs.

"I try to ride everyday of the week, ride and then work out," he said. "I do a lot of cardio workouts."

All that training helped lead John Cal to the biggest competition in the country. The 2006 AMA Amateur Motocross Championships in Tennessee. Twenty-thousand compete, just under 1,400 are named the elite in their class.

John Cal is one of those elite.

"You've got to be dedicated," he explained.

Just like John Cal, his mom had to overcame her fears for her son's safety on the track.

"It's scary a lot of times," said Andree Baker.  "But the more you around it, the more you get used to it."

There have been more than a few bumps and bruises along the way.

"We are on a first name basis with a couple of orthopedic surgeons in Longview," Andree said.

John Cal hopes to go pro someday. Fom the looks of it, his pro success could be full throttle.
