Fuel Fire Destroys Truck And Damages Garage

A fuel fire at an East Texas home destroys a truck and damages a garage.   It happened around 1:00 p.m. this afternoon at the corner of FM 2908 and Highway 271 in Smith County.   The Smith County Fire Marshal's Office says the home owner had a tank of gas in the bed of his truck. Somehow, the owner's dog knocked the gas over. It leaked under the truck and ignited from the truck's exhaust. Firefighters had to use both water and foam to contain the blaze.

"The biggest problem was the magnesium steering column inside the truck," said Smith County Assistant Fire Marshal Marilynn Wilson. "The Fords and Rams, Dodge trucks have a magnesium steering column and they have like a little mechanism that will keep it from unlocking and the magnesium fire is what is the greatest danger. You can't just put water on magnesium, it will explode."   No one was seriously injured in the fire. The fire marshal's office says the truck is destroyed, but the house will be fine.
