String Of Store Burglaries In Smith County

Five stores are burglarized in less than two weeks. Now, the Smith County Sheriff's Department is turning to the public to catch those responsible.

Three Dollar General stores have been broken into. Two of them are on Highway 155 and one is on 64 East in Chapel Hill. The burglars also hit the Noonday Hardware Store and a convenience store on Highway 69 just north of the loop.

Lt. Larry Wiginton with the sheriff's department says the burglar are hitting the stores late at night or early in the morning when they are empty, and cutting holes in the building to get in. Investigators say the robbers appear to be very experienced, so that might make them harder to catch.

"They appear to know exactly what they are doing. They have specific tools that they are entering the buildings with. They have specific tools, once they are inside the building, to get inside the safes."

The robbers are taking very few items from the stores. Instead, they are looking for the cash.

If you have any information, call the Smith County Sheriff's Department.
