Chris Bell is the Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate in the November Election.
Despite his somewhat low profile, 46 year old Chris Bell, a Democrat, is a major party candidate for governor. Speaking to the Texas Democratic Women of Gregg County today, the former Houston city councilman talked about his bid for governor, despite the fact that some folks may not know who he is.
"Well I won the primary with 62 percent of the vote, so a few people in the state of Texas know who I am" says Bell.
Some might say he's fighting an uphill battle against the likes of governor Perry, Carol Keaton Strayhorn and Kinky Friedman, but Bell says a crowded race works in his favor.
"Obviously the advantage that we have in this race is that I'm running against 2 Republicans who are likely to split the Republican vote. Its probably the strangest governors race we've had in a long time and I'm not talking about Kinky Friedman" Bell says.
Bell is also a former congressman, and feels that aside from marquee names, familiar issues will drive the election.
"Education, health care, insurance reform". Many who didn't know him, came away impressed by Bell's confidence.
"We feel like if we can keep the Democratic base united here in the state that we're going to have a new democratic governor in January 2007" he says.
