Smith County Employee Faces Prison Time on Intoxication Assault Charges

The jury coordinator for Smith County remained in jail in Austin Wednesday night, accused of intoxication assault.

61-year-old Mary Dodgen was arrested after police say she plowed her sportscar into five pedestrians outside a concert near Austin on Sunday. One of those people is in critical condition with head injuries.

Dodgen has served as jury coordinator for Smith County for five years, and greeted literally thousands of people showing up for jury duty.

"She was always a great employee -- very happy.  She brought morale up, and when you were feeling bad, she was one of the ones cheering up," says Smith County District Clerk Lois Rogers.

Last night, we showed a police mugshot from Dodgen's arrest in 2002 on a theft-by-check warrant. But we learned today from a court in Travis County that charge was later dismissed.

Also today, three of the five charges against Dodgen were upgraded to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.  Two charges of intoxication assault remain.  That is a third-degree felony.
