Southwest Airlines Tests Assigned Seats

The cattle call could be going by the wayside at Southwest Airlines.

The low-fare carrier leader says it will test assigned seating. It is a fresh indication that Southwest may join other U.S. Airlines by getting rid of its first-come, first-served seating system.

A spokesman says passengers will be assigned seats on about 200 flights from San Diego for several weeks beginning July tenth. A key question for Southwest is whether assigning seats will slow its ability to turn planes around. It now takes about 25 minutes. Any delay would add to Southwest's costs, weighing on profitability.
