Vandals strike an East Texas Cemetary desecrating dozens of gravesights. Now, police are trying to find out who's responsible. The vandalism was found early Sunday morning when a family was visiting their father's grave. They immediately called police to let them know a number of gravemarkers had been tampered with. It happened sometime before 4:00 this morning at the Lindale City Cemetary. That's just east of Mt. Sylvan Road on West South Street.
30 to 35 headstones were damaged by the vandals who broke into the cemetary. Many of the headstones were turned over, but they can be repaired. Others were completely destroyed. Jim Cox, the city administrator says he is appalled someone would do this.
"I have to admit it made me very angry, and the more I was able to walk around and view all of the damage, it was, you go from an anger to a sickness literally in your stomach about it," said Cox.
If you have any information about the cemetary vandalism, call Lindale Police. They are offering a $1,000 reward for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of the people responsible. They could be facing felony charges.
