Constable Dale Geddie Killed, Alleged Shooter Also Dies of Wounds

Smith County Precinct 4 Constable Dale Geddie has been shot and killed following police response to a domestic violence call north of Tyler.  Another deputy for the Smith County Sheriff's Department, Daniel Leon is in surgery with a gunshot wound.

The shootings happened on Pine Springs Road and County Road 3121, that's just off of 271 North around 11 a.m. when officers responded to a domestic violence call.  The shooter has been identified as 52-year-old Joseph Walsh, who was fatally shot by an officer following a three-hour standoff at the home.

A standoff lasting for close to three hours brought dozens of law enforcement and area residents to a staging area nearby.  It was apparent negotiators had been attempting contact or discussions with Walsh.  However, around 1:30 p.m. a single gunshot rang out and officers began moving in to declare the scene clear.

Constable Geddie had been on the job since January 2005.  He had previously served with the Smith County Sheriff's Department.

Deputy Daniel Leon joined the Smith County Sheriff's Department in 1998 as a jail officer, and worked his way to patrol deputy in 2004.

A press conference with more details is planned for this afternoon, and we'll have the latest information at 5, 6 and 10 p.m.
