TISD School Taxes On The Fall

Taxpayers living in Tyler ISD--expect to see some relief to your school property taxes. Wednesday the school board was briefed for the first time on how much those tax cuts will be. More specifically, the "maintenance and operations tax" will be reduced. Currently it's $1.4245. For the '06-07 school year it will be lowered to a $1.2631. For '07-08, $0.9497. The tax cuts are consistent with House Bill 1, passed by the state legislature. "For the last several years we've had moderate decreases in our [maintenance and operations] tax rate. The debt service tax rate went up because of the passage of the school bond. We believe with the relief the legislature is going to give us we will be able to overall lower everyone's tax rate in TISD," says TISD Superintendent, Dr. David Simmons. Officials at the meeting did say a lower tax rate does mean more state funding would be needed.
