A former East Texas police officer has pleaded guilty to charges of evidence tampering. Samuel Mark Turner was arrested and charged back in March. The charges stem from when he was working for the Troup Police Department. Turner gave an open plea today, meaning no agreement was made on his sentencing. Turner is also still facing a charge of distributing marijuana. The DA's office says it had a very strong case against him.
"He removed the marijuana from the evidence locker," said Smith County District Attorney Matt Bingham. "We do know he had delivered a misdemeanor amount of marijuana to a cooperating individual that was working with law enforcement. He did consume marijuana." District Attorney Bingham says Turner will also plead guilty to the marijuana possession and distribution charges. His sentencing date has been set for July 21st.
