Dozens of butterflies were released in Tyler this afternoon to remember East Texas children who have died. This is the third time the organization called, The Compassionate Friends of Tyler has held the event. The group helps families that have lost a child at any age for any cause. People of all ages came to honor their lost brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren.
"The butterfly to us represents eternal life," said Sam Smith, member of The Compassionate Friends of Tyler. "In my instance I compare it with Jesus as he went into the tomb thinking it was the end, he came out of the tomb as a butterfly comes out of the cocoon as a new free creature."
More than 150 names were read during the service. Families say they found peace and healing in talking about their lost loved ones.
