East Texas Classic Teams Officially Announced

When it comes to season opening high school football classics, they don't get much bigger than the East Texas Football Classic. And a late edition to this years lineup, gives it a little national appeal. All eight teams were represented this afternoon at a press conference in Tyler. The teams have won a collective 116 games over the past two seasons. For the third straight year, an out-of-state team is participating. Las Vegas private school powerhouse Bishop Gorman is replacing Canton as Gilmer's opponent. The Gaels are the first Nevada team to ever play a high school football game in the state of Texas. Head coach David White admitted to not knowing a lot about Texas football.

"We're going to have to watch 'Friday Night Lights' again," said White. "That's the only way, and to be honest, that's the only feel, or the only connection my kids have to it, is on TV. None of our kids grew up in Texas, have been in Texas, so I think the excitement is going to make us be a lot more, we're going to work a lot harder and look forward to it."

Coach White and his Gaels take on Gilmer at 8:00, Thursday night, August 31 in game one. Game two on Friday, September 1 pits Lee against Lake Highlands at 8:00. There are two games on Saturday, September 2. Forney and Whitehouse kickoff at 10:00am. John Tyler wraps up the classic, hosting Texas High for the third straight year. That game is scheduled for 8:00.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>

The last time we talked about the Kilgore Bulldogs, quarterback Buddy Jackson and wide receiver Jonathan Shepherd were apart of the 800-meter relay team that won gold at the 2017 state track meet. But today they are back in the pads, and looking to turn their speed into touchdowns.  Competing in District 9-4A, Kilgore has always had a strong run game that helped them become the 2016 District Champs.
