Balloons Released To Honor Smith County Foster Families

They provide a loving home for children who would otherwise not have one. Today, The Smith County Foster Parent Association honored foster families for "Elevating The Lives Of Children."

250 balloons were released, each one representing a child in foster care in Smith County. Currently, there are only about 30 homes to take care of these children, which means, frequently, siblings are split up. Event organizers hope the balloon release will raise awareness about the need for others to get involved.

Kellie Pittman is the vice-president for the association.

She said, "Everybody says, 'Somebody really needs to take care of these kids, but nobody really wants to take care of these kids.' They're disturbed sometimes.  They're emptional. They've had their lives disrupted, and it takes special people, and a lot of patience to take care of these children."
