A group of East Texas high school students is getting some serious accolades for their arguing ability. The seniors from Lindale High School are part of the newly crowned state champion debate team. They competed at the UIL competition in Austin this past weekend. Students also won awards in events like computer science, and journalism, earning enough points to win first place overall.
Holley Nees is a member of the debate team.
She said, "I think that its one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Not only has it helped my writing, but also my ability to speak in front of people."
Xiaoyun Wang is on the computer science team.
"I had a lot of fun, because going with seven people, who had put in just as much effort, or more, as you, to be able to advance to state is something extraordinary," said Wang.
This year, Lindale ISD has been plagued with financial problems, and widespread job cuts. The school principal and teachers say they are proud their students did so well, in light of that fact.
