Postal Service Looking To Boost Stamp Prices, Issues Forever Stamp

How about this for a hedge against inflation?

The Postal Service's governing board is considering issuing the "forever" stamp. It would stay valid for mailing a letter no matter how much rates may go up. Oh, and by the way, the board is also thinking about asking for a three-cent increase in the first-class rate for spring of 2007. The board meets today.

Like most Americans, the agency is feeling the bite of rising fuel prices. Other costs are also up.

The forever stamp would help soften the blow of a rate increase by allowing customers to stock up. As originally proposed it would sell for the first class rate and, once purchased, would always remain valid.

Any proposed change would go to the independent Postal Rate Commission, which has ten months to act.
