For 20 years now, UT-Tyler has tried to give $1 Million to anyone who could hit a golf ball into a golf hole about 150 yards away. For 20 years, no one has been able to do it. The universities big fund raising push kicked off once again today with a luncheon and golf clinic. Former PGA Tour professional and ESPN commentator Charlie Rymer entertained the crowd with stories and golf tips.
The 20th Anniversary UT-Tyler Cox Communications Patriot Million Dollar Hole-in-One Contest kicks off qualifying on Saturday, April 29 and continue through Saturday, May 6. The contest offers amateur golfers age 18 and older the opportunity to compete, at $1 per shot, in preliminary daily rounds.
"Twenty years ago, six qualifiers took one shot at a hole for a million dollars in what ws the first Million Dollar Hole-In-One contest in East Texas," said Ingrid Young, chair of the Tyler site. "Since then, the Hole-In-One has grown into 40 finalists not only shooing for a million dollars, but also a boat or truck. Last year, over 40,000 shots were hit at the Tyler and Longview sites by thousands of participants."
The Tyler contest site is off South Broadway behind the Holiday inn Select. The Longview contest will be held at the UT-Tyler Longview University Center.
Daily qulifiers are persons who hit closest to the hole, as well as those who hit a hole-in-one, during the qualifying rounds.
The finals, and the chance to win a truck, a boat or $1 million, will take place at Willow Brook Country Club on Sunday, May 7. Three holes are set up on the green during the finals, and each hole corresponds to one of the prizes.
