Chamber Of Commerce Won't Endorse Jail Ballot

The Tyler Chamber of Commerce supports a downtown Smith County jail site, but in the upcoming election, the chairman says voters don't have the right options.

Walter Wilhelmi says more analysis is needed on the scope and cost. On May 13, voters will have two choices: a new jail downtown, or a remote location in North Tyler.

"Really more important than the cost is that we don't have multiple options -- like 'we looked at these three options for downtown and this made the best choice for this particular reason.' Because in my mind, it's not about dollars. It's about what is the best option for location. We think it's downtown, but there could be some other options in downtown that make more sense," Wilhelmi says.

He also stresses the chamber is not a party to the No-No Committee formed this week.  That's a collection of citizens who want a no vote on both locations so commissioners will go back to the drawing board.
