TISD Board To Vote On "Earl Campbell Field"

The field at TMF Rose Stadium could soon bear the name of the Tyler Rose, Earl Campbell.

It's a proposal the TISD School Board is set to vote on next week.

TISD officials confirmed that at the Thursday, April 20 meeting, they will vote to name the field in honor of John Tyler graduate and Hall of Famer Earl Campbell.

The stadium name would not change, only the field would be named after Mr. Campbell.

John Tyler fans will remember in 1973, a young Earl Campbell helped to lead the Lions to the state title. He went on to the University of Texas where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1977. He eventually became a Houston Oiler and was named the NFL's Rookie of the Year and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991.

Friday afternoon, KLTV spoke to Mr. Campbell by phone about the possibility of his alma mater playing on a field named after him.

"As I went through different stages in my life, college, I always wondered if people in Tyler are they seeing this Monday Night game?" Campbell said. "Are they seeing us play against Oklahoma? So Tyler and Austin Texas I think it doesn't get any better. So, I feel very honored."
