Irwin Field, UT Tyler Baseball Park Dedicated

The Major League Baseball season officially begins Sunday night, but in Tyler Saturday, a local college got some major support and a baseball complex that would make any pro team jealous.

UT Tyler dedicated the Bob and Mary Irwin Field and UT Tyler Ballpark Saturday afternoon.

The celebration was complete with "umpire" stilt walkers, pop corn and of course, hot dogs.

Bob and Mary Irwin contributed $1.2 million towards the construction of the baseball complex. The couple threw out the first pitch to begin the men's baseball and women's softball games.

" I like to see the student athletes engage in a game like baseball," Bob Irwin said. "Especially here where they don't even get a scholarship or anything. They play for the love of the game."

"It's a very gratifying experience, we were very blessed we were able to do this for the university," Mary Irwin said. "Just watching these young people that are so extraordinary in their talent, and their ability has been a great joy to us."
