No smoking will be allowed on Smith County Health District property from now on. During a meeting this evening, the Northeast Public Health District Board decided to ratify its current no smoking policy. Until today, the regulation had only addressed smoking inside Health District buildings. The new mandate, which is effective immediately, prohibits smoking outside as well.
Board members also discussed an initiative to limit second-hand smoking in restaurants in Smith County. Although no decision was made, the board agreed to keep this item on its front burner. "A commitment to keep this item on the table, to continue to address the second-hand smoke issue, figure out what's been done in other places. What can we do, the pros and cons of different things," said Northeast Texas Public Health District Director Nick Sciarrini.
In order to institute a no smoking policy in restaurants, in Smith County, commissioners would have to approve it.
