Arp Tigers The New Class 2A State Champions

The first time was the charm for the Arp Tigers.

The Tigers claimed the 2A state championship Saturday in their first appearance ever in Austin.

Arp defeated the Ponder Lions 65-49.

Sedrick Johnson was the MVP. He scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half. Mark Gill had 16 points and 16 rebounds for Arp.

The town could not be more proud of their champion Tigers. The players and coaches arrived home from their victory Saturday night to a champion's welcome.
Complete with a police escort, fans and family members lined the sidewalks to greet the champs.

"We are just numb still and just more excited than you can ever imagine at this point," said Tiger fan and Arp Elementary School Principal Johna Huse. "It was a great run and we're so proud of Coach Keith and all the boys."

"Coach gave me some encouraging words," said forward and MVP Sedrick Johnson. "He said give it all you got, you've only got two more quarters. He said it would be the last two quarters for the whole year and I put it all out there on the line. That's what we all did. That's how we did it."

"It's a great end to a lot of work by these young men and I'm so proud of them," said Coach Brian Keith.
