Rivercrest Captures First Ever State Title With Win In Austin

AUSTIN (AP) _ Rivercrest claimed the UIL Class 1A Division I state championship today with a 57-49 win over Gruver. Drew Godwin scored 16 points and Aaron Palmer hit a key 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter for the Rebels. The 6-foot-6 Godwin towered over Gruver, doing most of his damage in the second half of the game in Austin. He scored seven points in third quarter as Rivercrest (34-and-2) slowly built a 10-point lead, watched it evaporate, then pulled away for the win in the fourth. Gruver trailed 40-30, but pulled even early in the fourth behind an 11-1 run. Godwin hit a mid-range jumper to retake the lead. Matt Messer scored 16 to lead Gruver (28-and-8), while Tyler Lane added 15.
