Fire departments from across East Texas rush to stop a massive fire at a Kilgore apartment complex. Several apartments are damaged, and the fire also spread to nearby buildings.
The Rocky Ridge apartment complex on North Henderson Street is a few blocks away from Kilgore College.
After 4 hours, firefighters have the fire contained. But no before, spreading to a chiropractic clinic, then to a duplex behind the apartment. Officials say more than 20 families have been displaced. One person was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
The owners of the apartment complex had owned it for just three weeks. Their daughter, who was the on site manager, had just moved in.
"It was my new home. I'm a single mom with 2 boys. We just moved in and got settled, got unpacked and stuff. I haven't had a chance to tell them," Sandy Gertz, Manager of Rocky Ridge apartments.
Officials say the wind made it difficult for them to contain this fire.
The Kilgore Public Safety Director says they do not have an exact cause. But they do know that it began at the south end of the apartment.
