Gulf Coast Governors Stress Need For Aid

Gulf Coast governors say they need every dollar available to help rebuild from last year's devastating hurricane season.

Total spending on the devastated region is heading toward the 100 (b) billion-dollar mark. The governors say a lot more will be needed, with housing continuing to be the top priority.

Texas Governor Rick Perry complained to a Senate panel that states slammed by Katrina are getting more generous help than his state, which bore the brunt of Rita. He wants an extra two (b) billion dollars.

Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco warned against playing the states against each other. She also urged lawmakers to "avoid the temptation to chip away at our promised funding and divert it to the other states."
