Big Sandy Hires Familiar Face As New Football Coach/AD

Big Sandy High School has a new football coach. He is Robert E. Lee assistant coach Darold Turner. But Coach Turner is no stranger to Big Sandy. He coached the Wildcats for five seasons in the 1990's. His wife teaches in the district, and his youngest son is already in the school system.

"I'm just excited to be back home," Turner said. "This is home to my family. A lot of tradition here, great community, great people to work with, great administrators, plus the kids here are just awesome."

Turner takes over a Wildcats program coming off a 1A state championship game appearance, where they lost to Stratford 21-20. He says his learning curve will be a short one.

"I'm very familiar with the kids," Turner said, "very familiar with the community and the people, and I really think we can keep some great things going."

Turner was coaching under Mike Owens at Lee when the Red Raiders won the 5A Division I state championship in 2004. He spent four seasons at Chapel Hill before that. He coached coached at Hawkins before his first stint at Big Sandy.

He plans to meet with the Big Sandy players and coaches tomorrow.
