African-American Actress Honored With Stamp

An African-American actress who made history in Hollywood was honored in Tyler today. The U.S. Postal Service and Tyler College joined to unveil the stamp of actress Hattie McDaniel.

McDaniel became the first African-American to win an Academy Award for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind. She is the 29th Black Heritage Stamp Honoree. The Post Office says the stamps honoring African-Americans have been quite the sellers. "This is the highlight for us each year, doing this particular stamp event, the best turnout. It's the best-selling product that we generally have each year," said Azalea Station Manager Mark Page.

The stamp is available at post offices nation-wide. Other African-Americans that have been honored with their own stamp include Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcom X and Harriet Tubman.
