Research Facility Renamed In Palestine

An East Texas space research facility has a new name. The balloon facility in Palestine is now called the "Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility."  The change is to honor the seven astronauts killed in the Columbia Shuttle disaster.

Since starting up in 1963, researchers from all over the world have gone there to conduct experiments. Politicians, researches, and even some astronauts were on hand for today's re-naming ceremony. "Individuals who give of themselves for the benefit of others should be recognized. This facility was used as a staging center that was used in an integral part of the recovery effort and it was only fitting that we rename it the 'Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility,'" said Senator Todd Staples, R-Palestine.

NASA approved the name change in August. The 55-acre facility has nearly 90 employees.
