Sen. John Cornyn Says Congress Must Evaluate Arab Ownership Of Seaports

U.S. Senator John Cornyn was in East Texas Wednesday, and on his mind is the growing furor in Washington over the sale of six U.S. seaports.

A British firm is working to sell the ports in New York, New Jersey, Miami and elsewhere to a company owned by the government of the United Arab Emirates.

President Bush calls that country an ally in the war on terror, but Cornyn says he wants the sale of the ports to be halted until Congress can look at whether the ports can really be secured.

"I can tell you that it's not a done deal. There are a lot of questions. I have a lot of questions, and I'm sure that congress is going to want to be satisfied that our security interests were protected in this arrangement," Cornyn said.

President Bush has threatened to veto legislation to halt the sale. That could set off a showdown on Capitol Hill.

Cornyn was in Tyler Wednesday to visit the University of Texas at Tyler.
