Council Shelves Proposed Hilton Hotel After Neighbors' Protest

Folks living near a proposed Hilton hotel in South Tyler score at least a partial victory.

The Hilton Gardens Inn and Suites is slated to be built on about six acres between South Broadway and Sutherland drive.

Before the Tyler City Council Wednesday morning, homeowners said the lights, traffic, and noise would destroy their quality of life.  Plus, they say their privacy would be violated with a hotel as tall as three stories.

Also at issue is how much notice residents got that this hotel was to be built right next door. The developer says he tried to work with residents. Neighbors disagree.

Kirit Patel plans to develop the site.

"We did try to set up a meeting with the neighborhood. They were advised. Only two ladies showed up [at a meeting]," Patel said.

Area resident Rick Reynolds:  "That is a complete farce. There have been no neighborhood meetings at all. There has been no attempt to make neighborhood meetings."

The Council tabled approving construction, giving the developer and residents more time to meet and discuss the plans.
