Freedom Quilt Honors Black History Month

In Marion County, a group of women used needles and thread to offer a lesson in black history. Women from 2 East Texas churches have created the "freedom quilt" to tell the story of the underground railroad. Organizer Joyce Hewitt says the quilt depicts an elaborate code that runaway slaves used to signal each other to crossroads, safe houses and places to get food and water along the escape routes.

The group has shown the quilt at several area schools, saying it helps us all understand one another. The quilt will be on display at Crisman School on Eastman Road in Longview every Sunday.
