REL District 12-5A Champion

For the first time in 24 years, the Robert E. Lee Red Raider boys are outright district champions.
Lee claimed the district title Tuesday night.

"At the beginning of the year, they all came out with their predications and my little group was picked to be seventh out of seven," said Coach Alan Johnston, "and at the end of the year, they are one out of seven."

REL Coach Alan Johnston told his team each season comes in four phases: warmups, tournaments, district games and the state playoffs. The Red Raiders beat the critics and made it to phase four.

"We won all of our games on the road and we won some on the road," Johnston said. "We went 500 on the road. For a championship team, that's what you have to do."

Many thought because REL had lost all their guards from last season the team would not be able to rebound from the loss. But the Red Raiders went 9-3 this year in district, 25-5 overall.

"Since the last time there was an outright district championship, the kids on this campus weren't even born."

As district champs the Red Raiders have a bi and then could play either Carrolton Newman-Smith or Dallas Samuel to open the post season. As far as a game plan, Coach Johnston thinks his team already has found a way.

"We're going to stick with what got us to the dance," he said.
