Q & A Session Held For Jail Project

Members of the media, as well as the public, had the chance to ask Smith County commissioners about the proposed sites for the new county jail. A special Q and A session was held this morning in commissioners court. One of the proposed jail locations is in downtown Tyler. The other site is on CR 378 and CR 381 about three miles north-east of downtown Tyler. That proposed location, has residents nearby concerned.

Residents say even though today's session was helpful, not all of their questions have been answered. "Well, they're not giving us the correct answers. They say they're trying to give it us but because a lot of us cannot read through what they're saying, the legal stuff," said Martha Welch, who lives near the proposed site.

Commissioners are scheduled to receive the "guaranteed maximum price" for the proposed sites next Monday. After that, they'll decide which location they want to build it on. Smith County residents will vote on that location this May, in the bond election.
