Mother, Child Escape Morning House Fire

A mother and child escaped a house fire in Tyler Wednesday morning, and investigators say they know where it started.

It happened around 8:45 a.m. at a residence in the 3300 block of Gail Lane. That's just off University Boulevard in southeast Tyler.

A mother and child quickly escaped after the woman smelled smoke. She found part of the home heating system on fire.

Investigators do not yet know why the fire started there, but with colder weather forecast, they say now is a good time to make certain your own home heating system is ready.

Jeff Tucker, Tyler Fire Investigator: "In all electrical equipment -- all electricity that heats up -- it's a good idea to get annual maintenance to be sure it's operating properly."

Total damage to the home is estimated at a $100,000. A total of 24 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire.

Reported by Morgan Palmer.
