Patriots Baseball Picked To Repeat

UT-Tyler's baseball team opens it's season one week from tomorrow, and they will do so as conference favorites. The Patriots have been picked to repeat as the American Southwest Conference East Division Champions. They finished 30-7 last season to earn their first title in just their second year of existence. And despite losing several key players, the Patriots say they welcome the high expectations.

"It's definitely an honor," said head coach James Vilade.  "It's not something we talk about a whole lot around here.  We got the nod and that's great, but we want to try to be postseason number one.  That's the big goal."

"I really think an undefeated season is in grasp," said junior college transfer thirdbaseman Brett Amyx.  "I definitely think a conference championship is within reach.  Winning makes life a lot easier, and I think life can be pretty easy this season for us."

The Patriots open their season Wednesday, February 15 against Texas Wesleyan at 4:00.

The last time the Whitehouse Wildcats qualified for a 7-on-7 state tournament was 2014, and they came one win short from taking it all.  But since their runner-up finish the Wildcats have failed to return to College Station; until now. We caught up with the Whitehouse crew this evening as they used the last of their league play to prepare for state.  The Wildcats will open up pool play against Westwood Round Rock at 2 p.m on Friday.  Copyright 2017 KLTV.
