Secretary Charged In Mount Enterprise Embezzlement

Authorities have charged a Mount Enterprise city employee with embezzling thousands of dollars in city funds over a 5 year period. That money had been earmarked for some much-needed community improvements.

"Theres a lot of disappointment here" said city council member and mayor pro-tem Debra Odem.

Their city secretary, who they trusted for years, now stands accused of pocketing their tax dollars.

"We called a special meeting on Friday when we felt that there was a due necessity due to Kim Vaughn" Odem said.

46 year old Kimberly Vaughn is charged with felony theft by a public servant. Investigators say she took an estimated 40 thousand dollars in city funds over 5 years. That money was supposed to go to city projects, such as a long awaited and needed sewer system.

"And you think about 40-thousand dollars would go a long way to making our payments on money we borrowed" said longtime area resident Ross King.

News of her charging did not come as surprise to some who had heard rumors of discrepancies.

"But to some council members and prior members i don't think it was a whole lot of a shock" Odem said.

Investigators say Vaughn took fee payments from citizens, gave them receipts, but did not deposit the money in the city's account, but into her own.

"We all trusted her, we trusted her with our city business" said Odem.

Vaughn is now free on bond. If convicted, she could face 2-to-20 years in prison.
