Kilgore Girl Donates Birthday To Charity

A big birthday party took place in Kilgore today for a little girl who had a very special wish; to cure cancer! As Brannon Russell celebrated her 5th birthday, she invited the entire city of Kilgore to help her with a wish she came up with completely on her own, a wish to stamp out cancer.  "I think it's a good thing. It amazes me that she thinks it up on her own. Nobody tells her this. She just decides on her own to do this," said Jason Brannon, whose father died of cancer.

Instead of toys, Brannon has asked for donations to go to cancer research, something she's raised money for since she was three years old. Her reasoning was the death of a grandfather she never met. "She asked why her grandfather was not with us, and I explained to her that my father got sick with colon cancer and the doctors tried but the medicine wasn't there to make him well," said Brannon's mother Jennifer Russell.  "My granddaddy died and I really miss him," said Brannon.

Surrounded by her friends and family, and even some Kilgore Rangerettes, she's become something of a role model... for adults.  "It's really a humbling experience to come here and see Brannon and how unselfish she is," said Rangerette Loren Cazzell.

Many are amazed at the maturity of a little girl willing to give up getting toys, to think of others. Brannon has already raised more than $1,300 for this year's Relay For Life, scheduled for April 28th and 29th at the Kilgore Girl's Softball Fields.
