Part of the grant money will be for a third party nonprofit to handle reimbursement for screening and diagnostic procedures for all service providers.
Grant funding is made possible through the proceeds from the 2005 Komen Tyler Race for the Cure®. The mission of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening, and treatment. Affiliates of the Komen Foundation represent one of the nation’s largest private funding sources for breast health and breast cancer screening, education, and treatment support programs.
In 2005, the Komen Tyler affiliate funded over $165,000 to local community projects including a program to use nurses to make home visits to breast cancer survivors, a conditioning program for survivors, a program encouraging Hispanic women to get a mammogram, a project to provide rehabilitation projects such as prosthesis, lymphodema sleeves, and wigs to breast cancer survivors and to show the proper way to conduct self-breast exams and a project to pay for breast diagnostic services for women who can’t afford them.
