Senate Begins Debate On Alito's Nomination

The Senate today begins debating the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to serve on the Supreme Court. All signs point to confirmation by the Republican-controlled body with a final vote possible by the end of the week.

Alito's nomination cleared the Senate Judiciary committee yesterday on a party-line vote. Republicans say Alito is the perfect choice for the high court. Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions says Alito represents "the ideal of American justice."

Democrats worry about Alito's deference to executive power and fear he could be the vote that helps overturn Roe v. Wade. So far only one Democrat, Nebraska's Ben Nelson, has indicated he will vote for Alito.
