Senate Panel Set To Approve Alito's Nomination

The Senate Judiciary Committee today will approve the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel Alito.

The vote is expected to be along party lines. All 10 Republicans on the panel have already said they will vote for Alito, guaranteeing his nomination will go to the full Senate with a positive recommendation. Half of the committee's eight Democrats have announced they'll vote against Alito and the other four are expected to follow suit. A 10 to 8 party line vote might normally indicate the possibility of a filibuster.

Democrats aren't expected to do that with Alito. They are, however, working to limit the votes he gets when the full Senate considers the nomination. The timing of that vote remains unclear, though it could come at the end of this week.
