Tyler Neurosurgical Center Involved In Back Surgery Study

Victims of spinal fractures, caused by cancer or osteoporosis are getting amazing results from a medical procedure tested here in East Texas. Results from a two year study conducted at Tyler Neurosurgical Associates are back. The study looks at success rates from a procedure called Balloon Kyphoplasty.
First, a surgical balloon is inserted near the collapsed bone. Then bone cement is released, lifting the fracture to it's previous position so it can heal much faster than standard procedures. And with much less pain. "Over two-thirds of them were pain free at one day and one week. 86% were pain free at three to six months. 90 percent were pain-free at two years," says Dr. Jon Ledlie of Tyler Neurological Associates.
Kyphoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia with only a small incision in the back to create a pathway to the vertebra. Tyler Neurosurgical Associates has been performing this surgery since 2000.
