Burn Bans Still In Effect

Yesterday's rainfall is the first time we've seen that much rain in East Texas on a single day, since Hurricane Rita, back in September. That does not mean all the burn bans have been lifted.

In Smith County, Fire Marshals are still handing out citations to violators. They say the rain may have helped the fire danger some, but they warn, the conditions could worsen again quickly.

Connie McCoy is the Assistant Fire Marshal for Smith County.

She says, "It takes a Comimssioner's Court and the judge, the county judge to lift the burn ban. It is a court order, and until that time, until they meet in a special session, then the burn ban is still in effect. There is no outdoor burning allowed at this time and citations will still be issued."

For the most up-to-date information on the burn bans, you can call the 24 hour Smith County Burn Ban Hotline at 903-535-5909.
