Smith County Commissioners Give Environmental Crime Agency More Power

Smith County commissioners are taking an aggressive stand to clean up East Texas. This morning, commissioners voted to install trash abatement procedures, that cover buildings and vehicles, in addition to garbage.

Smith County Environmental Investigator Danny Basher was appointed to be in charge of the operation. Once a complaint is filed, Brasher tries to contact the property owner for 30 days. If he cannot, the property is tagged and the owner has 10 days to get in touch with Brasher. Two public notices are given out in the newspaper during that 10-day period.

If the owner can't be located after those steps, county commissioners can vote on whether to demolish the property or take other measures.
