Super Bowl XL Lineup Set

The Seattle Seahawks will be making their first appearance in the Super Bowl when they represent the NFC in the championship game against Pittsburgh in two weeks in Detroit. The Seahawks earned their Super Bowl XL berth by outclassing the Carolina Panthers, 34-14 to win the NFC championship. Seattle opened a fast 17-0 lead and was never threatened by a Carolina team that seemed weary of playing its third straight playoff game on the road. Shaun Alexander, the Seahawks' MVP running back, ran 34 times for 132 yards and two TD's. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck was extremely efficient when he threw, completing 20 of 27 passes for 219 yards and two TD's. Seattle's defense forced four turnovers, including three interceptions by Jake Delhomme. This was the first time in its 30-year franchise history the Seahawks got to host an NFC championship, and they feasted off the crowd noise at their home field. The victory sends Seattle coach Mike Holmgren to his third Super Bowl. He won a Super Bowl in 1997 while coaching the Green Bay Packers. He's trying to become the first coach to win a Super Bowl with two different teams.

The Pittsburgh Steelers earned a trip to Super Bowl 40 with an impressive 34-17 win in Denver. The Steelers are the first sixth seed to reach the Super Bowl. They are the first team since the 1985 New England Patriots to win three road games en route to the Super Bowl. The Steelers, who won four Super Bowls in the Terry Bradshaw era of the 1970s, are making their first Super Bowl appearance since 1995. Ben Roethlisberger completed 21 of 29 passes for 275 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the winners to their third straight road playoff victory. Denver counterpart Jake Plummer had a lousy day. He completed 18 of 30 for 223 yards, but threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball away twice.

Super Bowl XL kicks off Sunday, February 5 at 5:25pm.  Coverage begins at 1:30pm, right here on KLTV 7.
