Opening Statements Set In Smuggling Deaths Case

Opening statements begin today in the third trial stemming from the nation's deadliest human smuggling case.

A South Texas couple and the woman's half-sister are charged with harboring and transporting illegal immigrants in a sweltering truck in May 2003. Nineteen people died.

The suspects could get life in prison if they're convicted.

Tyrone Williams, the man who drove the tractor-trailer, was convicted last year on 38 counties of transporting illegal immigrants. Prosecutors plan to retry him on murder charges that carry the death penalty.

Two other defendants were convicted of various smuggling charges. Two had charges dismissed. Five others pleaded guilty and one man remains a fugitive.
