East Texas Economy On Track To Outpace Nation

The East Texas economy is actually benefiting from both last year's hurricanes and high oil prices. That's from a well-respected economist speaking in Tyler Monday.

In his 22nd annual economic forecast, Dr. Ray Perryman said the state and local economic growth will beat the national average -- with annual growth for Texas more than four percent a year through the year 2010.

For both Tyler and Longview, he sees the yearly growth on par with the state average. He says the hurricanes along the Gulf Coast has bolstered the workforce, and put companies to work.

"The benefit we needed, obviously we needed some very skilled workers, and we're seeing the relocation of some Louisiana companies to Texas as a result of it, and more port activities as the result of it," Perryman said.

He adds while each of us is paying more for gasoline and natural gas, the oil and gas sector is doing better than it has in many years. And that helps the overall economy.
