Gift of Love: Suelena, Charming Girl Needs Supportive Family

Suelena is a charming young lady in need of a supportive family. She's spent many years in foster care. She' a beautiful girl with a great sense of humor and a bright future.

Like most young girls, Suelena likes to go shopping. As we enter Tyler's Target on South Broadway she heads straight to the jewelry counter. "I kind of like that one right there," she says pointing at a ring.

This 11 year old also likes skating, dancing and "I love music."

Cindy Whatley, Suelena's caseworker, says "I have a lot of kids that I'm proud of but I'm especially proud of Suelena.

Suelena has been through a lot at such a young age. Because of abuse at home, relatives stepped in to take care of her, but that didn't last either. "She ended up being removed from those relatives for chronic abuse as well." Cindy goes on to say, "I think it's had a lasting effect on her ability to bond and her ability to trust adults."

She has now been in foster care about six years. I asked her what it's been like being away from her family. She says, "It hasn't been hard being away from my real family because they didn't really like me."

What Suelena wants, and needs, is a forever family. "I would love to have that and love someone to care for me rather than someone who is mean to me cause I just don't like it."

Cindy says, "She want's somebody who is willing to except her for who she is."

Suelena's past left her with a lack of confidence and motivation, causing her problems academically. But recently, she's made a complete turnaround. I asked her how school is going this year. She says, "I'm making A's and B's."

"There are not many children her age who can overcome the obstacles that she's overcome and come out with a positive attitude as well as she has at 11 years old," says Cindy.

Suelena is even talking about getting involved in school activities. "I would like to try cheerleading."

"I think Suelena has 100% potential to succeed with the right guidance and the right parental support and the right people behind her to encourage her, I think that she could succeed in just about anything she tries," says Cindy.

The one thing Suelena needs to make it all happen is the Gift of Love.
