Crystal Ball Looking For Volunteers

It's an elaborate affair that lets the community take part in something special. We're talking about the Crystal Ball, a prom for special needs residents. Although the event won't be until May, organizers are getting ready to meet tomorrow. And, your help is needed.  Coordinators are looking for volunteers to help plan this special night.

Fancy dresses, tasty food and good music make the Crystal Ball an event many eagerly await. Crystal Ball participant, Kim Blow, says the best part of the dance is feeling fancy. "I got to ride, and I've never done this before, I got to ride a limo," said Blow.

Organizers expect a packed house at this year's ball, which will be held at the Harvey Convention Center in Tyler. "We're looking at 600 people, so we will need those volunteers to help serve, run food in and out and to fill the drinks and all that," said Crystal Ball co-chairman Kristy Redman.

The Crystal Ball is the main fundraiser for the Community Work Force of Texas, an organization that provides a full range of services to help people with special needs. The event hopes to raise $50,000, which will help pay for upgrades at the Community Work Force of Texas.

Redman says there are about 15 to 20 volunteers signed up to help plan the event, but many more are needed. "We probably could use about 50 right now to get selected for the sub-committee," said Redman. "That includes our decoration committee, entertainment, fundraising, food and activity, awards."

Crystal Ball Chairman Amanda Halter, who's helped organize the for the past three years says there's a lot of work to be done but in the end, there's no feeling like it. "I get teary-eyed, just there watching them dance. That's the best payoff that there is," said Halter.

The Crystal Ball will be held May 26th. The theme of this year's event is Mardi Gras in May. Everyone is invited to the event, which will be held at the Harvey Convention Center in Tyler. Tickets are $10.  To volunteer, you can attend a meeting tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. at the Community Work Force of Texas on Copeland Road.

If you'd like to donate dresses, shoes, tuxedoes, jewelry and other items needed for the event, you can drop them off at the location. For more information call the Community Work Force of Texas.
