The top criminal court in Texas has turned down Congressman Tom DeLay's request that charges against him be dropped or sent to a lower court for immediate trial. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals denied the former House majority leader's requests with no written order. DeLay and his lawyers had wanted to rush to trial in hopes of clearing his name so he could regain his House leadership position. But Saturday, he announced he wouldn't try to reclaim the majority leader job. Prosecutors say DeLay and two associates tried to get around Texas law to send nearly 200-thousand dollars in corporate gifts to seven Republican state legislative candidates.
