Along with building a new jail, Smith County Commissioners say they have enough money to remodel the courthouse, but district judges say that's not enough. The judges met this afternoon to discuss the renovation and security issues in the Smith County Courthouse. They say the current remodeling plan does not solve the security problems that exist. That has the judges hoping county commissioners develop a plan to build a new courthouse.
"The monies that have been budgeted and that were gained through the bonds were not enough to do all of it, so collectively it was decided let's go ahead with the remodeling since we're not going to use this facility long term let's not throw in the expensive security measure," said Smith County Commissioner David Stein, Precinct 2. "It sounds like their interests lie far greater on security than extra rooms." Nothing was decided in the meeting. Smith County Commissioners say the judges gave them a lot to think about.
